"In That Day"

A very informative verse provides an important aspect to an actual "earth changing " event in the future.  But the context of this verse should be given adequate consideration to give it the credibility it deserves.  The verse in question is Amos 8:9.

Amo 8:9    And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day

As far as I can tell, none of the commentaries that I looked at, were able to take the verse for the clear, literal, statement that it gives us.  Evidently they were not aware of the change in the earth's axis that we are headed for as described in the "The New Heaven and The New earth" paper. It is important to notice that the term "in that day" is speaking of a distinct period of time.  Also it states it will happen on a "clear day".  This statement is not describing a period of darkness that could result because of volcanic action or other geological disturbances.  It does picture the change that would occur when a change in the axis happens on a "clear day".

Now we need to look at the context of this verse as it refers to, "in that day".  Amos 8:10-14 speaks of great hardships for the people of God.  Verse 11 is of particular importance.  The Jews among others, from the time of the conquest by the Romans in Israel, were able to carry on with their faith, even at their peril.  This verse pictures a domination that that exceeds anything that has occurred in the past.

Notice that this famine occurs as a result of conditions "in the land".

Amo 8:10    I will turn your festivals into funerals and change your glad songs into cries of grief. I will make you shave your heads and wear sackcloth, and you will be like parents mourning for their only child. That day will be bitter to the end.

Amo 8:11    Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:

the LORD. I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken.

Amo 8:12    People will wander from the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean and then on around from the north to the east. They will look everywhere for a message from the LORD, but they will not find it.

Amo 8:13   On that day even healthy young men and women will collapse from thirst.

Amo 8:14    Those who swear by the idols of Samaria, who say, 'By the god of Dan' or 'By the god of Beersheba'---those people will fall and not rise again."

Amos 9:1-10 describes the hardships that will continue.  Verses 8 and 9 show that all of Israel, not just the Jews will experience that trouble, yet there will be a remnant that will survive.  It is important to know that the "house of Israel" is in reference to all of the tribes of Israel, not just the Jews.

Amo 9:8    Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.

Amo 9:9   For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.

Now we come to the most defining verses in these two chapters of Amos.  "In that day" God raises up Israel, the tribes who have become nations, to a future glory that is described in verses 11-15.  This occurs after the earth's axis has changed, after the House of Israel had been taken captive and after they have been brought back to their original land.

Amo 9:11    In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:

9:12    That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this.

9:13    Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.

9:14    And I will bring again (undo) the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

9:15    And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.
