TRUTH

One of the most soul searching statements ever asked by man was asked at the trial of Jesus the Christ.

John 18:38   Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

Pilate's question is most reasonable because of the fact that God has hidden truth from mankind.

1Co_2:7    But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

Col 2:2    That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

Col 2:3    In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Yet there are those who have been given "the word of truth".

Jas 1:18    Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

2Th 2:13    But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

We (most of us) can easily understand that truth has value, and for some a great value.

John 14:6   Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Isa 63:8    For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour.

2Th 2:10    And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

In the light of what is being promulgated by the various factions in today's world we can ask; will truth rule?  For those who have understanding the answer is a resounding yes!  Yet there is a sizable percentage of our population that truth is not a consideration in their progression toward their life's fulfillments.

2Ti 3:1    This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2Ti 3:2    For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

2Ti 3:3    Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

Rev_22:15    For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

Yet, in the realm where truth is expressed as a paramount consideration, "churches" today have an abundance of doctrine that are at variance with one another.  Where is this truth that God speaks of among these peoples?  There is an invaluable lesson that is given to us by the interest and work of a people that were part of the beginnings of the work that God began on the day of Pentecost.

Act 17:10    And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

Act 17:11    These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Act 17:12    Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

Everything that they heard from Paul and Silas was controversial.  But they did "the work" to see if what they said was in scripture.  It does take work and of course an interest enough to do the work while being guided by the Spirit of God.  There is a phenomenon that can be characterized by the term "spiritual inertia".  It affects us all.  If we think we have "evidence" for the truth of a matter yet someone presents other "evidence", can we be agreeable to do the work to try to find the truth of the matter?  In other words fight against our "spiritual inertia".

There was a certain impact on me when I read through all the times that the words "true" and "truth" were used in the New Testament.  I have thought that others may have a similar impression.  I did find something I thought was interesting.  In the Gospels Mathew mentions "truth" 3 times, Mark 3 times, Luke 5 times, but John uses that term, including 3 times in his letters for a total of  21 times.  Wouldn't there be a reason for John's need to use that term that often?  The following are the times that "true" and "truth" are used in the New Testament.
