What Is "Propitiation"?

Propitiation is Jesus meeting the demands of the Father, to appease His wrath or His abhorrence of sin, so that humanity could be redeemed to God. Thankfully, Jesus paid the price for our sins.  The core meaning of the word is APPEASEMENT.

(Rom 3:25)    Whom God (the Father) hath set forth to be a propitiationG2435 through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

G2435  Strong's Definition   hil-as-tay'-ree-on   Neuter of a derivative of G2433; an expiatory (place or thing), that is, (concretely) an atoning victim or (specifically) the lid of the Ark (in the Temple): - mercyseat, propitiation.     [Biblically, an- atonement- meant the "covering" of one's sin through the sacrifice of an animal]

G2435  Thayer Definition:

1) relating to an appeasing or expiating, having placating or expiating force, expiatory; a means of appeasing or expiating, a propitiation

1a) used of the cover of the ark of the covenant in the Holy of Holies, which was sprinkled with the blood of the expiatory victim on the annual day of atonement (this rite signifying that the life of the people, the loss of which they had merited by their sins, was offered to God in the blood as the life of the victim, and that God by this ceremony was appeased and their sins expiated); hence the lid of expiation, the propitiatory

1b) an expiatory sacrifice

(1Jn 2:2)    And he is the propitiationG2434 for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

(1Jn 4:10)    Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiationG2434 for our sins.

We again see that the Father gave his son to be an appeasement for all the abhorrent results that sin produces.

G2434  Strong's Definition:  hil-as-mos'   atonement, that is, (concretely) an expiator: - propitiation.

G2434   Thayer Definition:   1) an appeasing, propitiating   2) the means of appeasing, a propitiation.

The invitation to be saved is to WHOSOEVER... “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And WHOSOEVER WILL, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17). "Whosoever Will" may come to be saved because of the propitiation of Jesus the Christ.

Notice from 1Jn 2:2 that Jesus provides the “propitiation” of the sins for THE WHOLE WORLD. All people of every nation may come to know the Lord as personal Savior. God is no respecter of persons. Jesus has made provision for ALL PEOPLE to be saved and become the Children of God by way of Christ's blood sacrifice.
